Just a quick point I’ve always wanted to talk about – although I think there is nothing wrong with using animals in books for children, I often find that children’s authors try to ignore diversity by using animals to depict characters. I remember one year trying to find a children’s book with a black child/person as a main character. I couldn’t find ANYTHING, but I could find numerous white children and many many animals. I really want my kid to think he’s normal (and not a brown bear!) and would hope in the future that authors do not resort to using animals in order to elude the responsibility for depicting diversity.
