		<description>Great post! It is quite interesting to see what changes publishers thought were necessary and how those changes were made (i.e. gender being represented by yellow bows - har har). And reading the comments over at the Flickr page is quite upsetting. It makes me remember how so many people think that attempting to make changes to racist and sexist histories can simply be regarded as &quot;political correctness&quot;. Crap.

Just a quick point I&#039;ve always wanted to talk about - although I think there is nothing wrong with using animals in books for children, I often find that children&#039;s authors try to ignore diversity by using animals to depict characters. I remember one year trying to find a children&#039;s book with a black child/person as a main character. I couldn&#039;t find ANYTHING, but I could find numerous white children and many many animals. I really want my kid to think he&#039;s normal (and not a brown bear!) and would hope in the future that authors do not resort to using animals in order to elude the responsibility for depicting diversity.</description>
